A few months ago, I was contacted by a Google representative who asked if I would like a free consultation for my many Google Adwords campaigns. I run an OSHA safety training business, and spend quite a bit of money on online advertising.
When I received the offer, I was pretty excited. My little business had caught the attention of Google, who deemed me worthy of some free consultation. I had my ads set on conversion maximization, so it was automatically bidding for me. I figured that addition help would really help my improve my ROI.
Unfortunately, it did not turn out that way. They asked me to place the campaign in manual, and told me that they would get back to me in a few days. A week passed. Another week passed. I contacted them and requested a status update, and they told me 48 hours more. Then another week passed. Finally, they had my campaigns updated. Here is what I found:
1. Grammer and spellling errors. A lot of them. Some of the ads they created for me just didn't make sense. I found "Great Safety Trainings" in a lot of my campaigns.
2. Keywords: It seems that they didn't look at the landing pages of my campaigns, because some of the keywords did not make any sense.
3. Ad Groups: They created a few ad groups with no coherent theme.
I spruced it up the best I could and decided to let it run for a while and see how it performed. Both conversions and traffic decreased, and my sales dropped by over 1/3. Today, after two months of monitoring and tweaking, I just deleted all the work they did and reset it to where it was in early May.
So if you get an offer for Google for free consultations, I would think hard. If you are relatively happy with your ad performance, it may be wise to pass.
